Packing Light for a Coastal New England Trip

The one rule

Coastal New England rewards layers and punishes overpacking. The morning that starts in a sweatshirt ends in a t-shirt, and the evening that looked clear turns windy by the water. Build everything around one reliable layer system.

The actual list

  • One light jacket that handles wind and a little rain.
  • A fleece or sweater for mornings and evenings.
  • Two or three shirts you can mix under the layer.
  • One pair of real walking shoes, plus sandals for the beach.
  • Sun protection, because water reflects it back.
  • A small daypack for the car and the trails.

What to leave home

Leave the second pair of dress shoes, the full toiletry bag, and the "just in case" outfit. You will not wear it, and every coastal town has a drugstore if something genuinely goes missing.

The quiet essentials

A paper map for the dead-zone roads. Cash for the farm stands and the clam shack that does not take cards. A dry bag for the boat day. Snacks, always.

Pack light, plan one nice dinner, and leave room in the bag for whatever you find at a roadside stand. Always grab a map before you go; the best of the coast is never in the suitcase.
